The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) says declaration of assets by public officers instills confidence in the public and ensures transparency and accountability.
Speaking during a training session for the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) on asset declaration in Mangochi on Monday 22nd July, 2022, PAC Chairperson Joyce Chitsulo said the law on assets declaration was enacted to fight corruption and abuse of office and public resources.
“PAC intend is engaging CFTC to sensitize them on the law and the consequences of non-compliance before perpetrators are sanctioned or named and shamed. It is my sincere hope that by the end of the engagement you are going to be more aware of the law than before,” said Chitsulo.
In his remarks during the engagement, CFTC Chairperson, Jerry Jana said the Commission being a public institution interacts with many stakeholders.
“This training is a timely intervention so that we are helped to stay within the ambits of the law as we move forward. Let me assure you, Honourable Members, that our institution is committed to adherence to the asset declaration law,” said Jana.
CFTC is established by an Act of Parliament, the Competition and Fair Trading Act (CFTA). It is mandated to regulate, monitor, control and prevent acts or behaviour which are likely to adversely affect competition and fair trading in Malawi.
