Appointment of Mr. Desmond Kaunda as CFTC CEO

The Commission is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Desmond Kaunda as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC), effective immediately.

Mr. Kaunda is a distinguished legal professional and human rights advocate with over 30 years of experience in governance, social justice and international human rights law.

Mr. Kaunda’s career is defined by a commitment to public service and institutional building and integrity. Admitted to the Malawi Bar in 1996, Mr. Kaunda holds an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex and an LLB (Hons) from the University of Malawi.

He served as the Director of the Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) for over a decade, managing complex donor-funded initiatives and public service charters. In addition, his tenure as a Human Rights Commissioner from 2005 to 2012 and his recent role as Chairperson of the Tilitonse Foundation highlight his deep understanding of regulatory frameworks and democratic accountability.

Mr Kaunda is USA University of Minnesota Law School Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow and a Guest Researcher at the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR)- Denmark.

The Commission believes that under Mr. Kaunda’s leadership, the Commission will continue to strengthen its mandate, ensuring that the Malawian marketplace remains competitive, transparent, and fair for both businesses and consumers.
