The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) would like to inform the general public that Tiger Brands, a South African manufacturer, is recalling certain KOO and Hugo’s canned vegetable products produced from 1st May 2019 to 5th May 2021 due to defective cans.
According to Tiger Brands, the cans may have a defective side seam weld that could cause the can to leak. The recalled canned products include KOO and Hugo’s canned vegetable range, including baked beans. The defective products may be contaminated and therefore harmful to consumers.

Bearing in mind that some of the products are imported into Malawi, on 29th July 2021, CFTC carried out shop inspections in Lilongwe to assess the availability of the recalled product on the market. The inspectors found that the recalled products are available in some of the shops and supermarkets. The Commission would like to advise all consumers who may have purchased the recalled products to immediately return them to the suppliers for proper disposition. The Commission is also directing all traders who have stocks of the recalled product to immediately stop selling them.
The Commission is further advising consumers to critically check the material information on the products before purchasing or using them.
