On 1st July 2024, Malawi ushered in a new competition regime, the 2024 Malawi Competition and Fair Trading Act, to align it with developments in competition law replacing its 1998 predecessor. The new law has new provisions such as a mandatory suspensory merger regime, abuse of buyer power, and regional cooperation in competition law.
The African Competition and Consumer Protection (AFCCPCentre, in collaboration with Competition Policy and Law Africa Network (CPLAN) will have a conversation with Mr. Lloyds Vincent Nkhoma, Chief Executive Officer, Malawi Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC). We shall discuss why Malawi amended its competition law, the new provisions and what the future of competition and consumer protection enforcement in Malawi looks like especially in the era of digital markets and the AfCFTA competition regime. We will also be joined by George Naphambo, who will discuss the implications of the new law from a practitioner’s perspective.
