The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) would like to inform the general public that the recalled products by Tiger Brands are still being supplied by some traders across the country. Tiger Brands recalled specific KOO, Hugo’s and Helderberg canned vegetable products, which were produced between 1st May, 2019 and 5th May, 2021 due to packaging defects. According to Tiger Brands, the cans may have had a defective side seam weld that could cause the can to leak. Consequently, the defective products may be contaminated and therefore harmful to consumers.
In the wake of the order, on 29th July 2021, the Commission issued a statement, informing the general public of the product recall, and advising both traders and consumers to take necessary precautions. On 8th October, 2021, the Commission conducted another inspection of supermarkets and grocery shops in Blantyre and Lilongwe to verify compliance to a Product Recall Order by Tiger Brands.
During the inspections, the Commission found that there were several traders across the country that still stocked the recalled products particularly those under the specified batches below. This includes some of the leading supermarkets and grocery shops in the country.
In view of the findings above, the Commission has commenced investigations against the businesses enterprises found in contravention of the recall order. Therefore, the Commission would like to advise all consumers to be cautious when buying the subject products, with particular observance of the product batches specified below. The Commission would also like to warn all traders who are still stocking and selling the recalled products to immediately cease and desist from the conduct or otherwise face consequences.
