On 5th December, 1980, the United Nations adopted the international standard for competition laws called the Set of Multilaterally Agreed Equitable Principles and Rules for the Control of Restrictive Business Practices commonly known as the United Nations Set of Principles and Rules on Competition. Following this development, CUTS International launched a campaign advocating for the celebration of the 5th of December as the World Competition Day.
It is against this background that on 5th December, 2020, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) will lead Malawian consumers, traders, institutions and general public in commemorating this year’s World Competition Day. This year, the commemoration will be held under the theme: “Competition Policy and Access to Health Care”.
The commemoration event will commence on Friday, 4th of December with roadshows amongst other activities, that will be conducted in selected locations of Lilongwe city and a panel discussion that is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 5th December, 2020 from 6 pm at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe, and will be aired on Times Radio and TV. The panelists for the discussion will include the Executive Director of Competition and Fair Trading Commission, the Secretary for Trade, the Secretary for Health, Chief Executive Officer of Medical Aid Society of Malawi (MASM) and Executive Director of Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN). The general public will be allowed to provide their views during the discussions through phone calls and messages. All measures for prevention of COVID-19 will be adhered to for those that will physically participate at the venue of the panel discussion.
