VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates of Malawian Nationality to fill the vacant positions existing in the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC).

THE ORGANISATION

The Competition and Fair Trading (CFTC) is a statutory corporation established to enforce the Competition and Fair Trading Act (CFTA) Chapter 48:09 of the Laws of Malawi. The objective of the Act is to safeguard and encourage competition and fair trading in Malawi. In this regard, the Commission is responsible for ensuring that businesses are not engaged in anti-competitive trade practices; and regulating and monitoring monopolies and concentration of market power thereby strengthening efficiency of production and distribution of goods and services, securing the best possible conditions for freedom of trade, safeguarding consumer welfare and setting a favourable operating environment for expansion of the country’s entrepreneurship base.

Location: Lilongwe,

Reporting to the Director of Consumer Affairs, the Consumer Analyst shall conduct economic analyses and investigations on cases relating to unfair trade practices. The Analyst shall provide research support which will form the basis for guiding implementation and review of competition and Fair Trading Act and associated regulations and guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Analyst shall undertake the following functions:

  • Investigate and conduct analysis on unfair trade practices;
  • Sermon and interview complainants and respondents on cases brought to the Commission;
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a database on unfair trade practices;
  • Draft economic policy papers, speeches for the management team and for presentation at various fora;
  • Design projects for donor funding in line with the CFTC goals and objectives;
  • Serve as case officer for complaints brought before the Commission;
  • Conduct market inquiries to gather information necessary for determination of cases; and
  • Perform other duties as requested.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics or Business administration with emphasis on quantitative and/or analytical skills;
  • Good foundation in microeconomics, including course work in industrial organization and financial institutions;
  • Strong communication, analytical and problem-solving abilities; and
  • Ability to grasp new concepts and be able to work under pressure.

Competition Analyst

Location:1 Mzuzu,1 Lilongwe

Reporting to the Director of Competition, the Analyst shall assist in conducting economic analyses and investigations on cases relating to mergers, abuse of dominance, and anti-competitive agreements. The Analyst shall provide research support which will form the basis for guiding implementation and review of competition policy across the CFTC departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as case officer for complaints brought before the Commission;
  • Participating in case investigations and conducting of economic analysis on mergers, abuse of dominance and anti-competitive agreements;
  • Provide expert input in economic policy formulation particularly on competition and consumer policy
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a database to facilitate competitive analysis.
  • Draft economic policy papers, speeches for the management team and for presentation at various fora.
  • Initiate project proposals for donor funding in line with the CFTC goals and objectives;
  • Conduct market inquiries to gather information necessary for determination of cases; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned by superiors.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics or Business administration with emphasis on quantitative and/or analytical skills

The Administrative Assistant will serve as a secretary to the Executive Director. He/she will be required to perform secretarial tasks and exercise a high level of discretion and the application of administrative and business management skill.

Attend to visitors and deal with inquiries on the phone and face to face. Supply information regarding the organization to the general public, clients and customers.

  • Answer telephone, screen and direct calls;
  • Take and relay messages;
  • Provide information to callers;
  • Greet persons entering organization;
  • Direct persons to correct destination;
  • Deal with queries from the public and customers about the Commission;
  • Ensure knowledge of staff movements in and out of organization;
  • Monitor visitor access and maintain security awareness;
  • General administrative and clerical support;
  • Assist in prepare letters and documents;
  • Receive and sort mail and deliveries;
  • Organize conference and meeting room bookings;
  • Maintain appointment diary either manually or electronically;
  • Co-ordinate meetings and organize catering; and
  • Ensure that the reception area is tidy and well maintained.

Qualification and Competencies

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Malawi School Certificate of Educations and certificate in secretarial studies;
  • Typing speed of 50 words per minute;
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures;
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications;
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practice;
  • Verbal and written communication skills and professional personal presentation;
  • Customer service orientation; and
  • Organizing and planning skills.
  • Good command of English.

The Driver shall provide transport logistics to the Commission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specifically, he/she shall:

  • Ensure that the Commission’s cars are well maintained and have valid licences;
  • Drive members of staff for meetings and field work;
  • Deliver communications to stakeholders.
  • Ensure vehicle cleanliness
  • Timely service of Commission’s vehicles
  • Enter data in logbooks and produce vehicle reports.

Qualification and Competencies

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Malawi School Certificate of Education;
  • Valid driving licence;
  • A grade II certificate in motor vehicle mechanic;
  • Demonstratable experience in a busy office; and
  • Should be reliable and a self-starter.
  • Good command of English

Appointment and Remuneration

The positions are permanent subject to 3 months’ probation and meeting agreed performance targets. The successful candidates shall be offered an attractive salary and benefits in accordance with the Commission’s Conditions of Service.
