Director, Mergers and Acquisitions
Richard Chiputula is an economist with vast experience in trade policy and competition law enforcement. He has worked for the Ministry of Industry and Trade in different capacities for over 10 years. He has been a key member of Malawi’s trade negotiating team for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Protocol on Trade; COMESA Treaty; the ACP – EU Economic Partnership Agreement; and the World Trade Organisation. He is currently working for the Competition and Fair Trading Commission as Director of Mergers and Acquisitions. As Director of Mergers and Acquisitions his major responsibilities include cartels enforcement, regulation of unilateral conducts and merger control.
Before joining the Commission in 2012 he worked for the Malawi Economics Justice Network as Manager for trade advocacy and Director of Programmes. His major responsibility was to advocate for inclusive economic policies at national and international levels.
Richard holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics (specializing in international economics and Industrial Organisation) and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (specializing in rural development), both from the University of Malawi. On the professional side, he holds a Diploma in International Trade from the World Trade Organisation Training Institute and a host of other qualifications in trade negotiations and enterprise development.
