Public Hearing

In a quest to increase awareness and satisfy due process on the enforcement of competition law and policy, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has organised a public hearing to be held on Friday 30th January 2015 at Game Haven Lodge in Bvumbwe.

During the public hearing, the CFTC Secretariat will present provisional findings of the investigations that they have been conducting to the Technical Committee of the Commission for adjudication. As part of the adjudication process, the Technical Committee will also receive testimonies or submissions from interested parties.

CFTC commemorates World Competition Day

Executive DirectorThe Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has said proper functioning of public procurement will enhance Malawi’s economy by generating effective demand and consumption.

 

The sentiments were made by CFTC Executive Director, Mrs Charlotte Wezi Malonda, in a statement to mark World Competition Day which falls on 5th December every year. This year’s theme is Competition Issues in Public Procurement.

CFTC recognized as a corrupt free organisation

CFTCThe Competition and Fair Trading Commission has been recognized as one of the top three Malawian organisations that have taken the initiative of fighting corruption at the workplace. This was announced by the Anti-Corruption Bureau during the 2014 commemoration of the International Anti-Corruption Day held at Grand Palace Hotel on 13th December 2014.

The celebrations, which were presided over by His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi, were held under the theme “Stop Corruption, Develop Malawi”.

Malawi to host Africa Consumer Protection Dialogue Conference

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) is pleased to announce that Malawi has been named host the 6th Annual Conference of the African Consumer Protection Dialogue.

The conference will be held in Lilongwe from 8-12 September 2014, under the theme “strengthening the framework for dealing with cross-border consumer violations”. The event will be jointly hosted by the CFTC alongside the COMESA Competition Commission and the United States Federal Trade Commission.

CFTC signs cooperation agreement with MERA

signing-ceremonyThe Competition and Fair Trading Commission and the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) have signed a memorandum of understanding on the enforcement of competition matters in the energy sector.

Apart from providing a framework for cooperation on any matters relating to anti-competitive behaviour, unfair trading, mergers and acquisitions, consumer protection and market analysis in the energy sector, the MOU will help improve understanding between the two organisations as well as minimize duplication of activities.

CFTC orders Game Stores, MSB to desist from misleading advertising

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has ordered Game Stores to cease and desist from engaging in prohibited unfair trading practices. This follows investigations the Commission conducted which established that the company engaged in misleading advertising by offering massive price discounts on products that were out of stock in violation of the Competition and Fair Trading Act and the Consumer Protection Act. The Commission heard that, between September and October 2013, Game Stores advertised price discounts on external hard drives that were out of stock at the time the promotion started.
